Is there any further information on this letterbox? I saw that it was replaced at
the end of July....I went to the location last night, but all I found was that silly
geocache. (apologies in advance to any geocachers) (btw - i have some
marvelous ideas regarding creating fake geocache boxes). I searched (fairly
thoroughly) all crevices at foot level, but there was some unpleasant garbage
attracting flies and I didn't have gloves or a stick.
thanks!

You were in the right spot... but sadly, Nepenthe was recently "geotrashed" or "geocrashed". The nicely carved stamp was taken and a bottle cap exchanged for it. Geocachers seem to be unable to distinguish between a letterbox & a geocache. The journal was full of comments from lower life forms -- remarks like: "You will get laid tonight". That was my first encounter with a geocache, and frankly, I was far from impressed.
The Greek Gods have agreed to hurl thunderbolts at the people who pillaged Nepenthe. They were going to send a flock of harpies to tear their hearts out, but I stopped them (Hera's idea, you know), that's a bit extreme.
I just e-mailed the person who placed the geocache to see if we can have both boxes co-exist peacefully... The geocache itself was full of the same garbage that was attracting flies... nothing I'd exchange anything but a used Kleenex for.
Nepenthe is a very popular and well-liked letterbox, and so, I feel that it deserves replacing... AGAIN!! I hope the geocacher & I can make some sort of arrangement.
In the meantime, Aphrodite sends her blessings to you, and Hermes will let you know when NEPENTHE RISES AGAIN!!

You know what really sucks about the whole geocache/letterbox
problem...is that letterboxing for the most part spells out exactly
where the box is, and there is no mistaking it for a geocache...but
with just being given coordinates with a ten foot or so margin of
error, they are always finding us by mistake.
Its a real shame. Nepenthe was a terrific stamp, Paul. And it was
hidden in a great spot. Don't let the geocachers win.

We just moved one of our letterboxes"Unal Trail" that was placed on 4/19/2002. On 6/26/2004 some geocachers had the cajones to put their cache right next to our letterbox. Since we have had bad experiences with geocachers in the past we decided to let them have the spot and find another location. We then posted a fairly tactful message on their cache/log page to reflect the intrusion. I am not suggesting that you do the same, but I made sure that the geocachers had several caches in the area. Hopefully they will take my note properly and not start vandalizing letterboxes.

Tara, have you figured out and gone for the "Star-Crossed" box yet? I think you'll find that the stamp is exquisite (if I can flatter myself), and it's very large, 4 1/2" square. It folds to fit in the box by using a duct tape hinge. A Popsicle stick serves as a brace to make the stamp stay open.
If the clue has you stumped, just think about a very famous playwright who wrote a very romantic tragedy...

No, I haven't yet. I've been experimenting lately with folding
stamps as well. I never thought of a popsicle stick...now I
definately have to find it and check it out! Cellissimo and I went
boxing about a week ago and were discussing Star Crossed and we
think we might know where to find it. Maybe this weekend.

Paul,
That stamp is awesome. My letterboxing pals are Scott S. and
SFdragonmomo. We've searched together for Atlantis, and
Nepenthe..and
we were worried that we had a curse or something. We did find
Star-Crossed
a couple of weeks ago and it was oh-so worth it. I want to thank you
for your
time and effort. You helped to create a fun excursion. =)
-laura
p.s. has anyone found Sunbird lately? that bird may have flown the
coop.

Yikes! Sunbird is the 1 box I haven't monitored lately. I know Moonbird was still in its nest as of a week ago. I'll have to fly up and take a look for Sunny.
I'm working on a special chemical solution that makes letterboxes invisible until a letterboxer approaches. It'll sense the presence of their personal stamp, and only then will it become visible (Ha! Ha! Raspberries to geocachers!)
Gee, if people want my boxes so badly that they want to take them, maybe I should start selling them on Market Street ;-)
Glad you enjoyed Star-Crossed, and yes, I have another box with a very big hinged stamp that's almost finished.

We definitely have to make some sort of peace with the geocachers. I
was upset when I hiked up into the Santa Monica Mountains to find the
Phoebe's Cabin LB, planted by Funhog (no less), had previously been
visited by geocachers who removed the (beautiful) stamp and left a
stupid little toy, but they can hurt us more than we can them if we
piss them off. I think the moderators of the Letterbox-USA site
should talk with the moderators of the major geocaching sites to help
spread the word that these are two very different activities. Maybe
education is our best bet.

How about adding a note to the letterboxes, maybe on the OUTSIDE, that says:
"This is NOT a geocach. Geocachers, please do not take the enclosed stamp -
it's meant for letterboxers to use to stamp their books. Thank you."
